The Truth about Jesus Christ and the Gospel

Many religious leaders have claimed to be messengers from God. However, how they prove this is true? If a religion is true, there must be undeniable proof of the founder’s credentials and evidence of divine inspiration of its book. The Lord Jesus Christ claimed to be God and the only way to receive forgiveness of sins and eternal life. He also proved His credentials as God by fulfilling prophecies, performing miracles, and living a perfect life. Most importantly, Jesus Christ proved His claims through His death, burial and resurrection.

Jesus Christ’s words & works prove He is God

The Lord Jesus Christ never demanded “blind faith” in Himself, but backed up every claim with many infallible proofs. Many religious leaders have claimed to be God or from God, and that following their religion is the way to get to Heaven. However, only Christ fulfilled all the prophecies, performed unquestionable supernatural miracles, and rose again from the dead, proving that this is very Christ.

The Jewish religious leaders were infuriated by Christ’s teachings and tried to stone Him because He used the very title of God for Himself.

“Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?

Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

Then took they up stones to cast at him…” John 8:57-59

Christ also claimed that He is the only way to receive everlasting life and forgiveness of sins.

“Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.” John 5:24

“Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.” John 14:6

During His ministry on earth, the Lord Jesus demonstrated His power over sin, sickness, demons and death through His works.

He forgave sins.

Jesus demonstrated His power as God by forgiving sins on multiple occasions. The religious leaders accused Christ of blasphemy because they recognized that only God can forgive sin.

“And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?” Luke 5:20-21

He healed miraculously.

Christ demonstrated His power over disease by healing people with incurable diseases, such as leprosy and blindness from birth.

“And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.

And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean. And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed.” Mark 1:40-42

And Jesus answered and said unto him, What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? The blind man said unto him, Lord, that I might receive my sight.

And Jesus said unto him, Go thy way; thy faith hath made thee whole. And immediately he received his sight, and followed Jesus in the way. Mark 10:51-52

He commanded nature.

Christ demonstrated His power over nature by stilling the storm

“And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now full. And he was in the hinder part of the ship, asleep on a pillow: and they awake him, and say unto him, Master, carest thou not that we perish? And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.” Mark 4:37-39

He raised the dead.

Christ proved His power over death by raising people from the dead.

“Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:

…  And when he thus had spoken, he cried with a loud voice, Lazarus, come forth. And he that was dead came forth, bound hand and foot with graveclothes: and his face was bound about with a napkin. Jesus saith unto them, Loose him, and let him go.” John 11:25, 43-44

Fulfilled prophecies prove Jesus is God.

Any supernatural claims must be authenticated by supernatural proofs.  God Himself challenges all religions to prove that they are really “from God” by predicting the future:

“Show the things that are to come hereafter that we may know that ye are gods…” Isaiah 41:23

The details surrounding Christ’s birth, life and death were all a direct fulfilment of hundreds of specific prophecies made hundreds, even thousands of years before He was born.

Many sceptics insisted that the Old Testament prophecies were written after Christ’s birth because they were too accurate. However, in 1947, a Bedouin shepherd discovered hundreds of copies of the Old Testament prophecies in the Dead Sea caves, dated at least a hundred years before Christ was born. This proves that the Old Testament prophesies were written well before Christ’s birth because the scribes of the Dead Sea scrolls had access to copies of the Old Testament long before the New Testament was written.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ

The Gospel message is this:

Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures.”  1 Corinthians 15:3-4

“Gospel” means “Good News.” The Gospel is the demonstration of God’s love and sacrifice for us.

While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

Because we have all sinned against God (eg. lying, lusting, stealing), we are under the penalty of sin.

“And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.” Revelation 20:14-15

However, God loves you and me. That’s why He sent His Son Jesus Christ to die in our place. Jesus paid the penalty that we deserved for breaking God’s law. He proved He is God and has power over death by rising again on the third day.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” John 3:16

God gave mankind the greatest gift ever offered and yet many have never received it.

“But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name” John 1:12

God says that anyone can be saved.

“For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” Romans 10:13

That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.”  Romans 10:9

Consider the facts about the Gospel and determine where you stand before God today.

The Truth about Jesus’ Death

Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures…” 1 Corinthians 15:3

The Gospel message is that Jesus Christ died, was buried, and rose again the third day. If Jesus did not truly die, He could not rise again, thus nullifying all the claims of Christianity. However, the evidence that Christ literally died is overwhelming.

The Swoon Theory

Some people believe that Jesus Christ did not really die but only swooned. They believe that he fainted from shock and blood loss, was buried alive, and was revived by the cold air of the tomb.

However, not even Jesus’ enemies questioned that Jesus really died. Consider the following facts surrounding Christ’s crucifixion:

  1. Blood loss from Roman flogging

“…When he had scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.” Matthew 27:26

Many victims died under the severity of a Roman whipping alone. The Romans used a whip made of leather thongs wound with heavy, jagged bones or balls of lead.   Jewish law permitted no more than 40 lashes for a crime, but the Romans could lash as many times as they wanted.   The heavy thongs cut through the skin, capillaries, veins, and finally the underlying muscles, until victim’s back was hanging in long ribbons of bleeding tissue.

  1. Christ’s collapse and extreme thirst indicated hypovolemic shock

“And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to bear his cross.” Matthew 27:32

Extreme blood loss from the flogging would often produce hypovolemic shock. As the heart raced to pump blood that was not there, the victim would often collapse or faint due to low blood pressure. The kidneys would then shut down in order to preserve body fluids, producing extreme thirst as the body desired to replenish lost fluids.

Christ collapsed while carrying His cross, so that the soldiers had to compel Simon of Cyrene to help carry the cross to Golgotha. He also declared extreme thirst on the cross (John 19:28), indicating His body’s desire to replenish fluids.

  1. Soldiers did not break Jesus’ legs

“Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him. But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs…”  John 19:32-33

Those who were crucified could stay alive on the cross for days, pushing themselves up on the nail in their feet in order to gain a breath before sagging down again upon the nails in their hands. This torturous process could continue until they had no strength left to push himself up again, and could not breathe any more. In order to hasten the death, soldiers would break the criminal’s legs.

No Roman soldier wanted to appear remiss in his duties, particularly if he bore the death penalty for failing to carry out orders. These soldiers were highly experienced with knowing what dead people look like, and would have checked Jesus thoroughly before reporting to Pilate that Christ had already died.

  1. Blood and water indicate fluid around heart and lungs.

“And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead. And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.” Mark 15:44-45

“But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.” John 19:34

Roman law gave the death penalty if the executioner failed in his duty. When Pilate expressed surprise that Christ had died already, he commanded a centurion to double check. When the soldier speared Jesus’ side, blood and water flowed out. This indicates that the soldier had ruptured the sack of fluid which would have gathered around the heart (pericardial effusion) and lungs (pleural effusion) due to hypovolemic shock.

  1. Burial process eliminated any possibility of life.

“And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.” John 19:39

Jewish burial customs meant that Jesus’ body was embalmed with approximately 100 pounds (45 kilos) of aromatic spices mixed together to form a gummy paste. This paste was applied to a linen cloth which was then wrapped around the dead body. A cloth was also placed over the face, and bandages secured around it. Jesus was wrapped by those who loved Him and would have done anything to see Him alive.

Finally, Christ’s body was placed in a solid rock tomb with an extremely large stone rolled against its entrance. These stones weighed approximately 1-2 tonnes, and were normally rolled by levers against the entrance, and secured with a smaller stone placed in front of it. This means that Christ’s embalmed body was trapped in an airless tomb for three days, eliminating any possibility of life.

Conclusion:

Jesus Christ literally died. Even if “swooning” was a remote possibility in Jesus’ case, it would be utterly laughable for the disciples to steal Christ’s half-dead body, only to watch Him creep about weak and ill, needing serious medical treatment, trying convince them that He had conquered death and was the Prince of Life. Though they might feel very sorry for Jesus, such an event would have never changed their lives to the point where they willingly gave up their lives for openly testifying of Jesus Christ’s resurrection.

The Truth about Jesus’ Burial

He was buried…” 1 Corinthians 15:4

Christ’s burial is the second part of the Gospel message. Attempts have been made to disprove Christ’s burial, but this cannot be concluded after examining the evidence.

The Wrong Tomb Theory
Some critics have suggested that the women and disciples saw an empty tomb – but it was the wrong one. However, Jesus’ burial was witnessed and attested to by His friends and foes alike. Christ’s disciples could not have entered the wrong tomb, nor could soldiers have guarded the wrong tomb, for the following reasons:

  1. Christ’s body requested from Pilate by Joseph of Arimathaea

“When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus’ disciple: he went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.” Matthew 27:57-58

Pilate had already verified Jesus’ death, and knew who was taking the body. Joseph of Arimathaea was a wealthy man and clearly identified himself with Christ. Therefore, Pilate would have known exactly who was taking charge of the body, and where it was being buried.

  1. Buried by Joseph of Arimathaea in his unused tomb

“And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth, and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock…”Matthew 27:59

Joseph of Arimathaea had already purchased the tomb in preparation for himself and his family – a testimony to his substantial wealth.

This tomb had never been used; therefore, no dead bodies or grave clothes could have been confused with Christ.

  1. Burial witnessed by women and Jesus’ disciples

“And he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed. And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre…” Matthew 27:60-61

Since Joseph owned the tomb, he could not have “accidently” buried Christ in a wrong tomb. Moreover, the women and Jesus’ disciples came with Joseph to witness the burial, so they could not have all accidently returned to the wrong burial site.

  1. The religious leaders and Pilate feared “resurrection rumours”

“Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate, saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again. Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.” Matthew 27:62-64

The chief priests and Pharisees had no doubt that Jesus was dead, but feared that the disciples would steal Christ’s body and pretend Jesus rose again. They took their concerns to Pilate, requesting that the tomb be sealed and guarded for three days to prevent any rumours.

They refused to take any chances in case someone did steal the body, and did everything in their power to ensure the tomb was properly secured.

  1. Tomb was sealed and guarded by Roman soldiers

“Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can. So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.” Matthew 27:65-66

The tomb was sealed, representing the power and authority of the Roman Empire. The penalty for breaking the seal was automatic execution by crucifixion upside down.

The tomb was further guarded by Roman soldiers, who also faced the death penalty for failing in their duties. Even if the disciples had the courage to consider breaking the seal, they could not have slipped past the guards.

Conclusion:

Jesus Christ was buried in Joseph of Arimathaea’s tomb, and everyone knew about it. Joseph could not mistake his own burial plot. Pilate had Joseph’s details, and could not accidently send soldiers to seal and guard the wrong tomb. The women and disciples could not all have witnessed the burial location and then all turn up at the wrong empty tomb. Everyone knew that Jesus was dead, buried, sealed and guarded in the tomb.

The Truth about Jesus’ Resurrection

He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures…” 1 Corinthians 15:4

The Gospel depends upon the resurrection. If Jesus Christ did not rise again, then Christianity has nothing to offer. Christ would be just another dead prophet. The Bible would be a book of lies, since its theme centres upon Jesus Christ being the Saviour of the world. However, Jesus Christ did rise again literally and bodily from the dead, and nothing can explain away the evidences.

Many attempts have been made to cast doubt upon Christ’s resurrection. For example,

The Stolen Body Theory
This theory is that the disciples stole Christ’s body, or that Jewish or Roman authorities had removed and kept it in their possession. The religious leaders of Jesus time were the first to push this idea, claiming that the disciples stole the body while the guards slept.

Hallucination Theory
Some attempt to explain away Christ’s resurrection appearances as mere illusions or hallucinations. They believe that the disciples were so heartbroken and deluded that they really did see Christ rise again – in their imaginations. Comforted by this vision, they went on to tell the world that Jesus had actually risen from the dead.

However, both theories fail to deal with the multitude of contradictory evidence for the empty tomb. Consider the following facts:

  1. Seal broken, stone rolled away

“And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him. And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun. And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre? And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great.”  Mark 16:1-4

The tomb stones were typically 1.5-2 tonnes in weight. When the women came on Sunday morning to complete the burial rituals, they were concerned about how to get past the stone. Yet when they arrived, they were astonished to find that the stone had been rolled away.

This stone would require several strong men to move it. Even if all the guards could have fallen asleep at the same time and the disciples tiptoed past them, they would not dare risk waking the guards by roll such an enormous stone to steal Jesus’ body.

  1. Empty, unwrapped grave clothes

“Then cometh Simon Peter following him, and went into the sepulchre, and seeth the linen clothes lie, and the napkin, that was about his head, not lying with the linen clothes, but wrapped together in a place by itself. John 20:4-8

The embalmment mixture would have stiffened the linen cloths like a shell. When John and Simon Peter entered the tomb, they saw that the grave clothes remained, undisturbed in form and position – but empty. On closer examination, they realized that the face cloth was removed to a different place, but still unwrapped.

No one would attempt to sneak past Roman Soldiers, break the Roman seal, move a 1-2 tonne stone, and then proceed to remove the grave clothes before stealing the body. Even if they tried, they could not possibly unwrap and reassemble cloths that had been essentially glued together without obvious tampering evidence.

  1. Soldiers bribed by religious leaders

“Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done. And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers, saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept. And if this come to the governor’s ears, we will persuade him, and secure you. So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.” Matthew 28:11-15

The Roman soldiers faced capital punishment for failing to keep their guard. They fled to the religious leaders for protection and were told to say they had fallen asleep on duty! No soldier would attempt to escape with such a weak excuse without the sympathetic aid of his superiors.

  1. Authorities failed to produce Christ’s body.

If Christ’s body could have been hidden during the busy Passover season, a Roman investigation would have quickly produced the corpse.

Jewish authorities would not hide the body, because they would only be aiding the resurrection rumours.

If any of Jesus’ enemies somehow had the body, they would have immediately quenched resurrection claims by producing the body.

  1. Testified by women

All the Gospel writers candidly record that women were the first to see Christ and believe in Him. In that day, women had no authority in the eyes of society, and their testimony did not count. There is no way that this would have been recorded as eyewitness proof of the resurrection unless it actually happened, and the writers were wholeheartedly committed to recording the whole truth.

  1. Disciples touched Christ’s resurrected body

“And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.” Matthew 28:9

“Then saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands; and reach hither thy hand, and thrust it into my side: and be not faithless, but believing.” John 20:27

Many people, including the disciples, thought Jesus must be a ghost and not literally resurrected. However, they were invited to touch and feel Jesus, confirming that Christ had literally and bodily raised from the dead.

  1. Transformed lives of disciples

“Then the same day at evening, being the first day of the week, when the doors were shut where the disciples were assembled for fear of the Jews, came Jesus and stood in the midst, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. And when he had so said, he shewed unto them his hands and his side. Then were the disciples glad, when they saw the Lord.” John 20:19-20

The resurrection dramatically changed Christ’s disciples. After the crucifixion, the disciples were hiding behind closed doors, afraid that they would be killed next. Before the resurrection, they were concerned about saving their own lives, not inventing resurrection stories.  Yet after witnessing the resurrected Christ on multiple occasions, they went straight to Jerusalem, the centre of the crucifixion, to preach that Christ was raised from the dead. No amount of persecution or martyrdom could silence their bold witness.

Even if the disciples dared invent a resurrection story, they would not endure torture and death for something they knew to be a lie.

  1. Seen by 500 eyewitnesses simultaneously

“After that, he was seen above five hundred brethren at once; of whom the greater part remain unto this present, but some are fallen asleep.” 1 Corinthians 15:6

When the Apostle Paul wrote this letter within thirty years of Christ’s resurrection, he reminded the church that the majority of those 500 eyewitnesses were still alive and could be questioned.

It is certainly possible for one or two heartbroken people to imagine that their loved one came back to life. However, it is utterly impossible for five hundred people to testify of exactly the same account at exactly the same time if they simply “hallucinated.”

  1. Witnessed by hostile enemy

Many sceptics argue that Christ was only “seen” by His friends and followers, so their testimony is not valid. However, perhaps the most astounding eyewitness account is by Saul of Tarsus, one of Jesus’ most zealous persecutors. Saul was in league with the religious leaders, and persecuted the Christian church. This continued until Saul saw the risen Christ. Saul became the Apostle Paul, and went around the world preaching till his martyrdom that Jesus Christ is risen from the dead.

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, Jesus Christ literally and bodily rose again from the dead. Many people worship dead saints in their sealed tombs. However, Jesus’ tomb is empty.  The Lord Jesus Christ is not some dead prophet but the living Saviour. He broke the power of sin, death and Hell when He rose again from the dead. Now He lives, offering salvation from sin and eternal life to all who repent of their sins and trust in Him alone as Saviour.
